Overview

Using a videocodec for encoding the remote session has several advantages, it’s fast and relatively lightweight. Video codecs are designed for and very good at moving images as is often the case with remote sessions.

However, there might be scenarios where using a video codec might not be the best solution, like when image quality or colour accuracy is paramount. Our selective encoder will in most cases do a very good job to determine which parts of the screen benefit from encoding with a video codec, you can also force thinwire to never use a video codec for screen compression.

When Thinwire is set not to use a videocodec, Twinwire will only use JPEG and Lossless RLE for compression, maintaining the best image quality possible. Thinwire will use considerably more bandwidth than when using selective encoding or full screen encoding.
